When can you put your baby in a bike seat?

When can you put your baby in a bike seat?

Your baby's first bike ride

Your baby's first bike ride is a special milestone. It gives you a sense of freedom, helps your little one discover the world, and is a wonderful way to spend time together. Whether you're cycling to the shops, the park, the beach, or visiting family, riding together is both practical and fun.

But when is it actually safe for your baby to travel in a child bike seat?

Many parents wonder when their little one is ready for that first ride. The answer depends less on age and more on your baby's physical development. In this guide, we'll explain what to look for, when it's safe to use a bike seat, and which type of seat is best for your child.

When can your baby ride on a bike?

Your baby can safely ride on a bike once they can hold their head up independently and sit upright without support. For most babies, this happens between 6 and 9 months, although the general recommendation is to start using a bike seat from around 9 months of age.

The reason is simple: your baby's neck, back and core muscles need to be strong enough to absorb the bumps and movements that naturally occur while cycling. Before this stage, these muscles are still developing, making a bike ride uncomfortable and potentially unsafe.

Planning your first ride together? Keep it short and choose a smooth, quiet route with as few bumps as possible. That way, both you and your baby can get used to cycling together comfortably.

When is your baby ready for a child bike seat?

Although you'll often hear that babies can use a bike seat from around 6 to 9 months old, age is only a guideline. Your baby's development is much more important.

Your baby is ready when they can:

  • Sit upright steadily without support.
  • Hold their head and neck firmly on their own.
  • Stay balanced without tipping over when you briefly let go.

Not quite there yet? It's better to wait a little longer. Every baby develops at their own pace, and safety should always come first.

Front bike seat or rear bike seat?

Once your baby is ready to cycle with you, you can choose between a front-mounted bike seat or a rear-mounted bike seat. Both are safe options, but each offers different advantages.

Front Bike Seat

A front bike seat is suitable from around 6 to 9 months up to 15 kg.

Benefits:

  • Your child sits close to you.
  • You can easily keep an eye on your baby.
  • Talking and interacting while riding is easy.
  • Compact and ideal for younger children.

For many parents, a front-mounted bike seat is the favourite option during the first few years.

Rear Bike Seat

A rear bike seat can also be used from around 9 months, although many parents prefer switching when their child is around 12 months or older. Rear seats are roomier, positioned higher on the bike and provide more freedom of movement.

Once your child weighs around 15 kg, it's time to move to a rear-mounted bike seat. These are generally suitable up to 22 kg, offering more space, a higher backrest and additional comfort for longer rides.

Another great option is a junior bike seat that mounts on the rear luggage carrier. These seats are perfect for children aged 5 to 10 years, up to 35 kg. They include a comfortable backrest, footrests and an extra hip belt for added safety.

Stay safe on every ride

Choosing a quality bike seat is important, but using it correctly is just as essential.

Choose a bike seat with good support

Look for a seat with a secure safety harness, plenty of body support and adjustable footrests. This helps your child sit comfortably and securely throughout the ride.

All of our bike seats meet the required safety standards and certifications, giving you peace of mind every time you head out.

Install the seat correctly

Always follow the manufacturer's installation instructions carefully. An incorrectly installed bike seat can significantly reduce its safety.

Protect your baby from wind and cold

Young children cool down quickly. This is especially true in a front-mounted bike seat, where they're exposed to more wind. A windscreen, warm clothing or a poncho will help keep your baby comfortable.

Ride Smoothly

Even when your child can sit independently, it's still important to cycle carefully. Try to avoid high kerbs, potholes and rough roads whenever possible.
